Words can barely describe the amazing experience I had, travelling to Birdsville, then spending 10 days in the Simpson Desert with 15 camels, 4 cameleers, and 5 other clients.
The Simpson Desert, like much of the area, currently has an amazing amount of water in it. Crikey, I had to be driven northwest from Birdsville with other clients for over an hour, then have a 4.7 km boat trip just to reach the camels, which were stuck on the western side of the creek!!
So much water, so many flowers, so many birds. Three kangaroos, and an emu, a few lizards, and bats flying around at night. Wild camels in the distance twice. Healthy cattle. Ancient artefacts in claypans. Moon and stars at night. Swimming in a huge waterhole in the desert on day four. All sorts of weather, including an ethereal fog in the desert one morning. Peace away from the madness in the rest of the world.
If you can afford it, go do it. If you can't, save up, or find the money and go do it. It's a very, very rare experience, walking through the desert with camels. Thanks to the Outback Camel Company, Andrew and his crew. Memories to treasure.
