Far from the usual trekking routes

Situated on the border of Nepal and Tibet, 20kms from Mt Everest, is a majestic, pyramid shaped mountain named Makalu. At an altitude of 8485m, Makalu is the 5th highest mountain on Earth. The trek to Makalu Base Camp sees far fewer visitors than other trekking destinations in Nepal and trekkers are rewarded for their efforts by superb alpine scenery, pristine wilderness and close contact with the local inhabitants. Makalu Base Camp lies at an altitude of 4870m and there is the opportunity to walk up to a spectacular, 5300m vantage point to view Mt Everest. This high-altitude trek will suit both experienced trekkers, and fit, active newcomers who are prepared to endure isolation and some long days on the trail. Group size: 6 - 12.

Led by Megan Davidson, this women-only group offers a supportive and memorable way to experience one of Nepal’s most remarkable trekking regions.

Trip Highlights

  • Trek into one of Nepal’s least visited high mountain regions, well away from the usual routes.

  • Reach Makalu Base Camp at 4,870m, with the option to walk higher for wider summit views.

  • Tackle a demanding trail suited to experienced trekkers and fit newcomers seeking real wilderness.

  • Follow quieter paths through the Barun Valley, staying in tea houses and meeting local communities.

  • Travel with an Australian trek leader and local crew on a Makalu itinerary rarely offered by Australian operators.
