Situated on the border of Nepal and Tibet, 20kms from Mt Everest, is a majestic, pyramid shaped mountain named Makalu. At an altitude of 8485m, Makalu is the 5th highest mountain on Earth. The trek to Makalu Base Camp sees far fewer visitors than other trekking destinations in Nepal and trekkers are rewarded for their efforts by superb alpine scenery, pristine wilderness and close contact with the local inhabitants. Makalu Base Camp lies at an altitude of 4870m and there is the opportunity to walk up to a spectacular, 5300m vantage point to view Mt Everest. This high-altitude trek will suit both experienced trekkers, and fit, active newcomers who are prepared to endure isolation and some long days on the trail. Group size: 6 - 12.

Fly to Tumlingtar, then continue by road to Num (1560m). It’s a long but rewarding travel day, with your first real look at eastern Nepal. (BLD)

(Trekking: approx. 6hrs)
The trek begins with a steep descent to the Arun River Valley (400m), followed by a steady climb to Seduwa (1510m). It’s a demanding first day on foot. (BLD)

(Trekking: approx. 4–5hrs)
Walk through terraced fields, forest and small settlements to Tashi Gaon (2070m). It’s a shorter day that helps you settle into the rhythm of the trek. (BLD)

(Trekking: approx. 6–7hrs)
Climb steadily through forest and alpine terrain to Khongma (3560m). This is one of the tougher days, with a big gain in altitude and wider mountain views. (BLD)

Spend the day acclimatising at Khongma. Depending on conditions, there may be a short walk to a higher point before returning to rest and prepare ahead. (BLD)

Cross Shipton La (4125m) and continue through rugged alpine country to Dobato (3800m). This is one of the scenic highlights of the trek. (BLD)

Descend through forest into the Barun Valley (3600m) and continue to Yangle Kharka (3700m), where the landscape opens out and the trek feels more remote. (BLD)

(Trekking: approx. 5–6hrs)
Follow the Barun Valley higher through open country to Langmale Kharka (4450m). The walking is gradual, but the altitude is now significant. (BLD)

(Trekking: approx. 4–5hrs)
Reach Makalu Base Camp (4870m), the high point of the trek. The altitude slows the pace, but the views make every step worthwhile. (BLD)

Spend a full day at base camp to rest, explore and take in this remarkable setting. Weather permitting, there may be time for a short walk higher. (BLD)

Retrace your route down the valley through Langmale Kharka to Yangle Kharka (3700m). It’s a long day, but lower altitude brings welcome relief. (BLD)

Climb back out of the valley to Dobato (3800m). It’s another solid day on the trail, with forest, ridgelines and fresh perspectives. (BLD)

Continue across the high country toward Danda Kharka (2962m) via Shipton La (4125m), with a mix of climbing, traversing and descending through remote alpine terrain. (BLD)

(Trekking: approx. 7–8hrs)
Descend toward the lower villages and cultivated hillsides. Warmer air and farmland signal that your time in the high mountains is drawing to a close. (BLD)

(Trekking: approx. 3–4hrs | Drive: approx. 4–5hrs)
Complete the final trekking stage back to Num, then drive to Tumlingtar for a well-earned night off the trail. (BLD)

Fly back to Kathmandu, with more Himalayan views if the weather is clear. On arrival, transfer to your hotel and relax. (B)
